Project Informations
About the project
Location
The proposed area is part of the hydro-technical development “Morii Lake Dam and Accumulation”, located in the north-western part of Bucharest, overlapping the minor riverbed of the Dâmbovița, between the Chiajna railroad bridge and the bridge over the river, at the entrance of Morii Lake.
Total surface area
36 ha
Biological diversity
The portion of the Dâmbovița located between the river’s entrance in Bucharest and the reservoir, along with the land in the immediate vicinity, is home to a very varied fauna of vertebrates throughout the year and, at the same time, is one of the most important resting and feeding places for migratory birds in the metropolitan area during spring and autumn migrations.
Minimum conservation measures and community enhancement opportunities
Connecting the natural area with other natural areas (Red Forest, the polder on the left bank of the Dâmbovița river) and green spaces (future Morii Lake Park)
Ensuring pedestrian or bicycle access along the entire length of the banks
Constantly sanitize and maintain the healthiness of the natural area
Planning fire prevention and extinguishing measures
Building partnerships for management with: civic organizations active in education and nature conservation, the City Hall of Sector 6, Bucharest City Hall, etc.
Detailed inventory/assessment and monitoring of biodiversity
Maintain the favorable conservation status of species and habitats by:
- Making turtle breeding islands
- Establishing and maintaining breeding sites for amphibians
- Establishment and maintenance of shelter, thermoregulation and hibernation sites for lizards and snakes
- Creating and maintaining areas for turtles to lay their eggs
- Setting up artificial nests and bird feeders
- Control of invasive species (e.g. Florida tortoise, ash trees)
Environmental education, information and communication with citizens through:
- Development and implementation of an education, information and communication plan, which will take into account the Green Week and the Week Different in the school curriculum
- Establishment of a minimum information infrastructure: thematic trails, ornithological observatories
Responsible tourism by:
- Integrating the urban natural area into a program to promote Bucharest’s natural heritage
- Provision of a minimum visitor infrastructure (water supply point, toilets, separate collection bins outside the natural area at access points)
- Assessment of the carrying capacity of the urban natural area
